Description:

If you are using a single ultrasonic insert for the sole purpose of gross debridement or are unsure of the use of contra-angled ultrasonic inserts, then this hands-on workshop is for you! This workshop will begin with clarifying the misconceptions surrounding the expanded use of power scalers. Emphasis will be placed on differentiating between power scaling technologies, insert design and selection, clinical instrumentation techniques and sequencing, aerosol management and treatment protocols. Hands-on instrumentation criteria will be used to easily comprehend, gain confidence and skills to achieve complete periodontal debridement. Includes strategies to treat periodontal wounds, provide definite sub-gingival debridement and de-plaquing. Note: The primary focus of the hands-on portion of this workshop is on instrumentation techniques, which includes adaptation, angulation and placement of a variety of ultrasonic inserts positioned on a typodont without the use of activated power scalers. This course is a repeat of Ms. Fong’s course (W12) on Friday, June 30 from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. Attendance is limited to 30.

Learning objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  • discuss the changes in the treatment of periodontal disease and its impact on the use of power scalers.
  • explain the clinical protocols when using a power scaler.
  • understand the rationale for using a variety of ultrasonic inserts to achieve complete periodontal debridement.
  • demonstrate the correct ultrasonic instrumentation criteria for ultrasonic debridement.
  • evaluate if complete periodontal treatment has been performed.

Participant Requirements:

Gracey Curet #5/6 OR #7/8 (or equivalent), Gracey Curet #11/12 and #13/14 (or equivalent).
