Description:

Tethered oral tissues (TOTs) are a hot topic in the dental world today. Curriculum pertaining to TOTs and the proper evaluation, diagnosis and treatment is absent in dental schools and residencies, so many “learn as they go” in practice. Proper treatment of TOTs involves multiple providers, including pediatricians, orthodontists, ENTs, lactation consultants, body workers, speech/feeding therapists and myofunctional therapists. This lecture will give insight into how a team approach to treating TOTs allows for proper evaluation, diagnosis and treatment with high success rates.

Learning objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  • evaluate tethered oral tissues (TOTs) correctly.
  • diagnose TOTs based on symptoms and anatomy.
  • understand the team based approach to properly treating TOTs.
  • gain insight into myofunctional therapy and the proper pre- and post-operative therapy needs of patients with TOTs.
  • understand the basics of surgical instruments used when treating TOTs.
  • gain an introduction into treating TOTs clinically.
