Description:

This lecture will review and update dentists regarding pertinent and common medical management concerns. Specifically, frequent medical conditions altering treatment in the office will be reviewed, including hypertension, antiplatelets and anticoagulants and medications placing patients at risk for medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw. The second half of the lecture will review narcotics management and prescribing controlled substances. This course does not satisfy the Florida Board of Dentistry's Prescribing Controlled Substances course requirement. Please refer to course OP1-2 on Friday, June 30 from 2-5 p.m. for that mandatory course.

Learning objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  • understand when and why not treating a patient is appropriate.
  • know how to manage anti-platelets and anti-coagulants in a dental setting.
  • understand how the indication for anti-coagulation and anti-platelet therapy alters the decision to hold or continue medications perioperatively.
  • understand the pharmacology, epidemiology and standard laws and rules related to controlled substances in Florida.
  • properly prescribe controlled substances and recognize specific risks related to opioid addiction.
