Description:

Research indicates that an overwhelming percentage of patients find dental care to be an anxiety-producing experience. At the same time, dentists and dental teams are frustrated when techniques that comfort one patient backfire on another. This lecture will explore the four types of underlying dental fears and the impact on a patient’s personality. Skills to identify these fears and alternatives to treat the patient’s fears will be discussed.

Learning objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  • learn the four types of dental fears and their various intensities.
  • understand how a patient’s underlying personality impacts how they behave in a fearful setting.
  • develop a technique to identify the patient’s fear.
  • learn to how to consider the patient’s fear in developing a treatment plan.
