Description:
During this lecture, Dr. Stone will review best practices for office-based sedation for the pediatric dental patient (ages 1-8), including special needs patients. Discussion of advanced IV sedation topics will include the management of uncommon patient conditions and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry policies and guidelines for selecting anesthesia providers. This lecture will be comprised of three 40-minute sessions with 10 minutes for questions/discussions and a 10 minute break between each session.

Learning objectives:
Participants will be able to:
- understand the components and regulations contained in the Florida Board of Dentistry anesthesia rule relating to pediatric patients.
- describe the guidelines for pediatric sedation supported by the ADA, AAPD, ASA and AAP.
- understand the uses and limitations of physiologic monitoring.
- identify significant elements of various pediatric medical histories with emphasis on special needs patients.
- identify significant findings in pediatric physical examinations.
- outline criteria for appropriate patient selection for pediatric sedation.
- list developmental and behavioral factors used in profiling children.
- understand the basic elements of informed consent.
- understand anatomical and physiological considerations of a pediatric patient.
- describe the pharmacokinetics of common local anesthetic and sedative agents.
- identify intra-operative complications and manage their resolution.
- define emergency preparedness and implement office protocols and staff training.
