Description:

This lecture will provide an overview of the tasks commonly performed by forensic odontologists. Data collection and comparison techniques needed to complete a dental identification, bite mark analysis and involvement in mass fatality incidents will be presented. Additionally, the role of forensic odontologists will be discussed. Note: Sensitive material will be shown during this course. Attendee discretion advised.

Learning objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  • define forensic odontology.
  • describe the typical tasks performed by the forensic odontologist.
  • define antemortem, postmortem, point of concordance, degree of certainty and bitemark.
  • describe how a bitemark analysis is performed.
  • understand the role of dentistry in a mass fatality incident.
