Description:

Substance abuse is at an all-time “high” in this country with an estimated 1 out of every ten Americans addicted to prescription or illicit drugs. As a dental professional, you must awaken to the reality that many of your patients have substance-use disorders and that your examination findings of advanced caries, severe hyposalivation and poor plaque control are often the effects of depressant, stimulant and opioid abuse. Learn how to recognize the clues of substance abuse from a routine dental examination, discuss your concerns and suspicions with patients, develop and deliver safe and effective dental treatment, and manage pain with non-opioid medications. *Note: Course content does not include marijuana. This lecture satisfies the Florida Board of Dentistry’s continuing education requirement for Safe and Effective Prescribing of Controlled Substances.

Learning objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  • identify the prescription and illicit drugs that patients are most likely to abuse (depressants, stimulants and opioids).
  • recognize the physical, behavioral and oral clues associated with depressant, stimulant and opioid abuse during a routine dental examination.
  • discuss substance abuse with patients comfortably and competently.
  • recognize evidence-based practices for managing dental pain without using analgesics with addictive potential.
  • develop treatment plans based upon caries-risk assessment by drug-use patterns.
