Description:

This course will enable dental professionals to realize the magnitude of domestic violence and gain an understanding of the signs, symptoms and injuries indicative of possible domestic violence. This course also will help dental professionals realize the reluctance of many victims to reveal the true cause of their injuries and will give them resources to share with their patients. Lastly, this course will provide referral information including law enforcement, Florida state regional resources and community-specific domestic violence assistance organizations. This course satisfies the Florida Board of Dentistry’s continuing education requirement for domestic violence.

Learning objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  • identify domestic violence.
  • describe the magnitude of domestic violence in society.
  • recognize the signs, symptoms, injuries and risk factors indicative of possible domestic violence.
  • understand the reluctance of many victims to reveal the true cause of their injuries.
  • comprehend the Florida statute related to the mandatory reporting of domestic violence.
  • recite the confidentiality and privileged communications statute.
  • conduct screening procedures used by health care professionals to identify suspected cases of domestic violence.
  • provide patients with information and refer them to resources within the community that offer assistance to families with issues of domestic violence.
  • learn about a national 24-hour hotline for victims and other resources.
