CE Hours: 3.50

What causes malocclusion? Would you be surprised to find that the same thing that causes malocclusion also can be the cause for TMD and sleep apnea in adults, and sleep disordered breathing in children? In this lecture, Dr. Norton will discuss soft-tissue dysfunction and airway, and their role in malocclusion, TMD and sleep pathology. Dr. Norton will explain how airway and swallowing can affect the shape and development of a child’s face, as well as how malocclusion can be fixed, and how TMJ and sleep apnea can be CURED — not just treated for the symptoms. Dr. Norton would like to show that a biologic approach to a biologic problem, like malocclusion, sleep disorders and TMJ can be a better solution than a mechanical solution, like CPAP and MAD appliances. In this 1st half lecture, Dr. Norton will discuss the causes of malocclusion and how to reverse the pathology and how to redirect growth to the maximum potential to achieve genetic beauty and symmetry. This is a two-part course (C01 and C15) that is best attended as a full-day learning experience. For comprehensive learning, you must register and pay for both courses for the full-day experience. However, attendees may choose to take the morning lecture course only.

Learning objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  • understand the difference between a mechanical solution and a biologic solution for the maladies of malocclusion, TMJ and sleep apnea.
  • recognize how to treat Class III at an early age to avoid surgery later.
  • learn a beginner’s level biologic physiotherapy treatment for Phase 1 orthodontics, TMJ and sleep apnea.
