Orofacial Pain 101: The Basics and Beyond

Description:

This lecture will review all aspects of orofacial pain and temporomandibular joint disorders (arthrogenous and myogenous disorders, internal derangements and other uncommon joint conditions), as well as neuropathic and neurovascular disorders. This lecture also will cover the etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and management of temporomandibular disorders. Dr. Patel will describe the relationships between myogenous and arthrogenous disorders and non-odontogenic sources of toothache, headaches and cervical pain. Examination methods also will be described and specific case studies will be discussed to illustrate each orofacial pain condition.

Learning objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  • recognize and screen patients with orofacial pain and dysfunction, including temporomandibular joint disorders.
  • describe the underlying pain mechanisms and dysfunction of the orofacial structures.
  • learn how to make common orofacial pain diagnoses and how to implement conservative treatments.
  • recall the relationships between orofacial pain disorders, headaches and cervical pain.
