Description:
This course will begin with an overview of the relationship between prescribed opioids and the increase in opioid abuse and deaths in the U.S. Dr. Sims will review acute pain management in the dental patient and will provide dentists and staff with up-to-date information regarding analgesic medications used in dentistry and medications patients take that might interact with this dental care. Non-opioid alternatives for pain management will be provided. This course DOES NOT fulfill the mandatory opioid course requirement (HB 21).

Learning objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  • describe the relationship of prescribed opioids to opioid abuse.
  • identify the illicit opioids placing opioid abusers at risk of death.
  • review appropriate analgesic therapy for pain management.
  • understand non-opioid options for pain management.
  • identify the most common drug-related issues and drug interactions for NSAIDs, opiates and tramadol.
