Description:
Research supports that nine out of 10 children suffer from sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). This course will provide the knowledge to recognize the outward signs and symptoms of SDB in children 2-12 years old. These signs and symptoms include, but are not limited to, mouth breathing, bed wetting, snoring, chronic allergies, night terrors, teeth grinding and ADD/ADHD. Poor oral habits, including thumbsucking and anterior tongue thrust, also will be discussed. The detrimental effects on the appropriate growth and development of children due to the outward signs and symptoms of SDB as well as poor oral habits will be reviewed to motivate providers to correct at an early age. Treatment with an oral appliance therapy technique will be discussed and how this system addresses and treats the underlying root causes of SDB. This course will reveal the importance of developing a proper airway to provide proper sleep and breathing habits, which allow the child to grow and develop properly.
